Why Your Choice of Website Platform Matters

The platform you choose affects essential aspects such as SEO, user experience, scalability, and cost. Effective SEO can propel your site in Google rankings, while an easy-to-use interface makes updates a breeze. Scalability is vital for future growth, and the cost is a determining factor in your choice.

Understanding Your Needs

The size and type of your business, as well as your level of technical comfort, should influence your decision. Different platforms are designed for different technical skills and business needs—whether you're building a portfolio, an eCommerce store, or something else.

Platform Reviews

WordPress

WordPress has become very popular over ther ages, but its age is showing when compared to the other platforms in this comparison. WordPress heavily relies on its extensive library of open-source plugins. This makes it not the most straightforward platform since you can quickly get lost in which plugins you need. Its initial free const can be appealing, but you’ll probably have to invest in a few paid plugins to meet your specific needs. With the right plugins, it can be one of the better options, but I would recommend Webflow over WordPress in most cases (learn why in Webflow vs Wordpress).

Wix

Wix is designed for people with moderate technical skill, providing a quick template-based approach. Providing a good balance between design freedom and ease of use. They have 800+ templates to choose from, but most look outdated. It provides good apps for e-commerce, but if e-commerce is what you’re going for, I’d recommend Shopify instead. Wix is ideal for a small-scale site that doesn’t aim to generate revenue. Prices start at €10/month.

Squarespace

If you have little to no technical skill, Squarespace is your best choice. It provides stunning templates. The editor interface is more intuitive and organized than Wix. However, you're sacrificing some design freedom. Squarespace is perfect for a simple portfolio or blogging site. Pricing starts at €15/month.

Webflow

Webflow is distinctive for its design flexibility and the ability to create workflows tailored to your business needs. The platform has the steepest learning curve but yields the highest rewards. However, once everything is set up, it's one of the easiest to maintain and comes with a lot of great benefits that I go over in What is webflow? The possibilities are endless the only thing it currently lacks is its E-commerce capabilities compared to Shopify. Pricing starts at €18/month.

Shopify

Shopify is the go-to for eCommerce, offering a wide array of payment gateways and apps to expand your store's capabilities. However, the cost of these apps can add up quickly. Prices begin at €28/month. It can be a bit of a hassle to customize your site the way you want to. But with the integration of Shopyflow you can build and manage your site in Webflow while you run your e-commerce in Shopify. Giving you the best of both worlds.

Teachable

Teachable specializes in creating and selling online courses. The basic plan starts at €39.

Framer

Framer, a newcomer, targets designers and is especially useful for those familiar with Figma. It's ideal for creating stunning designs but is limited in terms of third-party integrations. Pricing starts at €10.

Things to Consider Before Making a Choice

Before you decide, think about the long-term commitment to a platform. Investigate if the community offers robust support and tutorials. Make sure to consider your comfort level with technology, and remember that while some platforms are more beginner-friendly, others may require a steeper learning curve.

Your website is a significant part of your business success. Making informed choices based on your unique needs is vital. If you're looking to elevate your business, Rimbo Designs offers personalized consultations to help you choose the most suitable platform.
